Search Engine Results
Many sites rely heavily, perhaps too heavily, on search engines to generate traffic. Many smaller site may well do better with other marketing methods.
Points to Consider
Choosing your keywords is the single most important factor in determining the results you may achieve. There is little point in trying to compete for keywords that millions of others are also using or competing for.
It is almost impossible to do well on single keywords, a keyword phrase of two or more words is much more likely to do well. Also try and introduce a geographical element to the keywords. The keyword "Plumber" is unlikely to find your site, but "Fife Plumber" or "Kirkcaldy Plumber" will have a far greater chance.
Your Domain Name
When choosing a domain name, many people choose a name based around their company name. This is often a mistake as people tend to use the Web to look for a type of company, not a specific company.
So, "kirkcaldy-plumber.co.uk" or "kirkcaldy-plumbing-services.co.uk" are better than "johncleese-ltd.co.uk"
Planning Keywords
The optimisation of your Web Site begins at the very start. Your keywords should be chosen BEFORE you write the content for your pages. This way the content can be written to include the keywords. Each page should have only one or two keyword phrases, but each page can focus on different keywords.
